Mutai Captures Steeplechase Title at Bobcat Classic

SAN MARCOS, Texas -- Senior Daniel Mutai won the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase to lead a select group of Warhawks on Saturday at the Bobcat Classic.

Mutai set a personal record and clocked a Sun Belt-leading time of 9:05.49 to finish just under 40 seconds ahead of the field. His time is the 39th best time in the East Region this season. Sophomore Silah Chumba finished just behind Mutai in third place in a time of 9:55.72.

Sophomore Hillary Kirwa placed sixth in the men's 1,500-meter run in a time of 3:50.30 and freshman Dusan Makevic finished eighth in a time of 3:56.63. Kirwa's time ranks fourth in the Sun Belt this season while Makevic's time ranks 11th.

The Warhawks have two weeks off before heading to the Sun Belt Outdoor Championships May 10-12 in Miramar, Fla.
