Warhawks Fall to Colonels Friday Night

THIBODAUX, La. -- ULM managed just seven hits off of four Nicholls State pitchers and the visiting Warhawks were unable to push any runs across in a 3-0 loss on day two of the Carmel Inn Showdown.

Nicholls State (3-3) scored its first run of the game in the third inning as Tyler Duplantis delivered a sacrifice fly to center that allowed Justin Holt to score from third.

The Colonels added another run in the fifth, this time a collision in foul ground aided to a Nicholls State run. Jacob Stockton made a grab in foul ground and collided with Anthony Herrera and that allowed Philip Lyons was able to move to third and he scored thanks to a throwing error by Keelin Rasch. Both Stockton and Herrera got up after the collision and stayed in the game.

Nicholls State final run game in the sixth inning and it set the final tally at 3-0. Duplantis scored on a sac fly foul out by Christian Correra.

ULM (3-3) made things interesting in the ninth as they loaded the bases, but a groundout to short ended the Warhawk threat.

Alex Dumaine (1-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and two walks. The senior, lefty tied the career-high he set last week with seven punchouts.

Nicholls State starter Taylor Byrd evened his record at 1-1 after tossing seven shutout frames, allowing four hits with 11 punchouts. Marc Picciola earned his second save of 2014 with a scoreless ninth.

Rasch and Stockton each tallied two hits to lead ULM, while Duplantis led the Colonels with two hits, one RBI and one run.

ULM will return to the diamond tomorrow when they face Western Illinois for the second time this weekend. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
