MONROE, La. – The University of Louisiana Monroe cross country teams opened the 2017 season with impressive performances in the Warhawk Invitational Friday, Sept. 1 at Selman Field.
The ULM women posted six Top-10 finishes in recording dual-style wins over Northwestern State (W, 26-31) and Grambling State (W, 15-DNF).
Angela Jepchirchir and
Edith Jebet paced the Warhawks, finishing second and third (no times recorded), respectively. Other Top-10 finishers included Baille Cunningham (7th),
Anna Coffey (8th),
Josie Wood (9th) and
Kennedy Smith (10th).
The ULM men placed four runners in the Top 10 while going 1-1 in the dual format, defeating Northwestern State (W, 17-45) and losing a tight race against Grambling State (L, 29-26).
Jacob Holland led the Warhawks with his third-place finish, with a time of 17:32. Three other ULM runners placed in the Top 10, including
Brandon McDonald (4th, 17:39),
Elias Keter (5th, 17:52) and
Tanner Collins (8th, 18:35).
"Despite the muddy conditions, we were excited to get our first competition in Friday," ULM head coach
J.D. Malone said. "I was pleased with both of our teams' efforts. We were holding a couple out and still won all the duals, except one on the men's side. I thought our kids competed very well."
The ULM cross country teams return to action Friday, Sept. 8 at the Azalea City Classic in Mobile, Ala. The field features ULM, New Orleans, Mobile, Louisiana and host South Alabama.
