CONWAY, Ark – Junior
Bailey Thibodeaux doubled down the left field line in the top of the 5
th inning, sparking a six hit, eight-run rally that propelled ULM to its 17-11 win over University of Arkansas – Pine Bluff on day two of the UCA Invitational (Feb.25).
Thibodeaux's double was one of seven hits by the Warhawks in the victory, and one of a whopping 19 hits.
"Obviously, we pounded the ball today," said head coach
Corey Lyon "17 runs and 19 hits is an amazing offensive game."
Rochelle Roberts led the way for ULM with four hits, followed by
Hunter Hogan who tacked on another three to the total, and
Jayden Mount and
Megan Shaw with two hits each.
As soon as things kicked off,
Jayden Mount earned the first double of the day and would be the first to score once she advanced off the bat of Roberts then scored on an error by the Lions.
Roberts would score after a single by
Lauren Crouch, propelling the Warhawks into a 2-0 lead.
The Lions responded with three runs, taking an early 3-2 lead over the Warhawks. Both ULM and UAPB would then go two innings without any more runs, and the Warhawks were headed into the fourth inning with a one run deficit.
The fourth and fifth innings proved to be crucial for ULM in dominating the diamond, as they outscored Arkansas-Pine Bluff 12-5 in those two innings along.
ULM would build a 14-3 at the conclusion of the fifth inning, with runs being scored by Hogan, Roberts,
Samantha Agamaite, and
Victoria Pederson.
Once again, the Lions answered, scoring five more runs in the bottom of the inning and shutting down ULM's hopes of escaping with the run-rule.
Now leading only 15-8, and very much aware of Arkansas-Pine Bluff's ability to score while trailing, the Warhawks fought to add some security to their lead.
In the top of the seventh inning, Shaw sparked a "last hurrah" of sorts among the Hawks, sending yet another double down the left field line, scoring Thibodeaux who had reached on a Lion error.
Shaw would score the final run of the day off McKay's at-bat, as the result of yet another Arkansas-Pine Bluff error.
ULM finished the contest with 17 runs on 19 hits and committed only two miscues; the Warhawk pitching staff composed of
Sydney Wader,
Jessie Watts,
Rachael Murphy, and
Paige Murray pieced together a night that gave up 13 hits and walked only five batters. Watts (2-0) walks away with the win.
"I'm happy with our performance on the offensive front, but it's clear we have some work to do in the circle. We gave up too many hits and too many runs in this game and that won't be acceptable in the match-ups ahead of us" Lyon said.
The Hawks are now 7-4 overall and will face one more in Conway, tomorrow (Feb.26), when they play South Dakota State University bright and early at 9 a.m.
