Softball Hosts UT-Arlington for 'Strong as Steele Day' and Home Run Derby

Softball
MONROE, La. – Head softball coach Corey Lyon and his 19-13 crew are on a roll, seven games to be exact. Next up for the ULM Warhawks is Sun Belt opponent UT-Arlington. The Hawks will open the series with the Mavericks for their annual 'Strong as Steele' double-header on Saturday (Apr.7).

The Warhawks will also be hosting their Home Run Derby after Saturday's double-header, scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.

ULM continues to move up the national ranks with their performances at the plate. In fact, the Warhawks are currently ranked 2nd among over division I teams in scoring, plating 7.06 runs per game. The teams' batting average of .336 gives them an impressive 6th ranking.

Leading the Warhawks at the plate is Sydney McKay, who's 49 hits put her first in the Sun Belt in that category, contributing to ULM's first place average .333 in the process.

ULM occupies four of the top five spots on the Sun Belt scoring list, with McKay at the top, sophomore Jayden Mount coming in at 3rd, followed by seniors Rochelle Roberts and Hunter Hogan in 4th and 5th respectively.

This weekend's series between ULM and UTA will be the 35th time the two teams have met, with 102 games in the history of Warhawks and Mavericks. The Hawks have won 49 of those contests.

Last year, the Warhawks dropped the series to the Mavericks in 1-2 fashion, unable to win either of the last two games after shutting out UTA in game one 3-0.

UTA (18-16, 7-4) is traveling to Monroe after a mid-week win about Houston Baptist (Apr.3) and a sweep of SBC foe Appalachian State. UTA's fielding efficiency is one of the best in the conference, completing nearly 98% of their plays and completing a conference high 20 double-plays.

Where the Mavericks struggle is at the plate, with a .256 average across the roster. In the circle, UT-Arlington is led by JoJo Valencia, a sophomore left-handed pitcher who was a recent transfer from the University of Incarnate Word where she led the pitching staff with a 3.77 ERA; this year, Valencia has compiled a 2.91 ERA and an 8-11 overall record.
