Box Score MONROE, La. ? The Warhawks women's tennis team continued its strong play to open the season by defeating McNeese State, 5-2, at Heard Stadium on the campus of ULM on Wednesday afternoon.
ULM (2-0) used four singles victories and a pair of doubles wins to defeat the Cowgirls and remain undefeated early in the season.
“It was a great match for us today,” ULM tennis head coach Terrence De Jongh said. “We had beautiful weather to play. There were some tough matches for us down the line-up that I think will really help us. It will certainly help us improve for our upcoming matches.”
The Warhawks jumped out to an early 1-0 overall lead after claiming victories in the top two doubles flights. Senior Noelia Leon and junior Sharon Makhanya quickly dispatched Victoria Martinez and Meri Gol Alamo in the top spot, 8-1. Seniors Lena Satge and Giovanna Arrondo gave ULM the point after winning 8-3 at No. 2 doubles.
In singles play, Satge and Arrondo quickly extended the Warhawks' advantage to 3-0 after winning in straight sets at No. 2 and No. 3 singles.
McNeese State battled back, picking up a win at No. 6 singles before freshman Ana Burjaili was able to tally the match-clinching victory in come from behind fashion in the fourth position, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Junior Marion Lehmann rounded out the Warhawks scoring at No. 5 singles, downing Petra Gudelj in a tightly contest match. Lehmann held on for a 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 win.
Freshman Claire Clark also won on the afternoon, downing Hanna Bihorac 6-2, 6-0 in a seventh singles flight.
ULM will take the next week off before beginning a five-match road stretch at Mississippi State on February 9.
