ULM Drops 4-2 Home Match against Arkansas State

MONROE, La. -The Warhawks women's tennis team continued a series of home matches on Friday against Arkansas State, but couldn't hold on to an early lead in falling 4-2 at Heard Stadium on the campus of ULM.

 

The Warhawks started off strong, picking up wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. ULM's Noelia Leon and Sharon Makhanya started off the set of doubles victories by shutting out Rone Van Wyk and Renee Branker, 8-0 in the top position. ULM led at No. 2 before the point was clenched and play was suspended.

 

ASU (5-5) picked up back-to-back singles wins at No. 6 and No. 2 for a 2-1 lead. Giovanna Arrondo tied the match with a 6-1, 6-3 straight-set win at No. 3 singles over Menna Kamal.

 

Arkansas State won the next two matches at No. 2 and No. 5 to clinch the match at 4-2. Sharon Makhanya finished out the singles matches by fighting hard against Renee Branker before falling, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.

 

“It came down to the last two matches,ULM head coach Terrence De Jongh said. “We lost a tight one at home and unfortunately came up a little short in the third set of a few singles. We played very strong in doubles, but ran out of gas towards the end of the match.”

 

The Warhawks continue a weekend of home matches by taking on Delta State at 10 a.m. Saturday at Heard Stadium. ULM wraps up a six match home stand with a 10 a.m. match against UAB on Sunday.
