Box Score HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The ULM women's tennis team came close, but started a season-long seven-match stretch with a 5-2 loss against Southern Miss in Hattiesburg, Miss. on Saturday afternoon.
ULM (7-7) dropped a pair of three-set matches and came within two games of claiming the doubles point in the match.
Southern Miss (7-3) grabbed an early lead after picking up wins at first and second doubles. ULM avoided the doubles sweep with a 9-8 (7-3) win at No. 3 singles by Giovanna Arrondo and Lena Satge.
Freshmen Claire Clark and Ana Burjaili picked the Warhawks only points of the day, grabbing victories at No. 6 and No. 3 singles, respectively. Clark dispatched Lauren Gutterman in straight sets while Burjaili picked up the win after Brittany Serret was forced to retire.
The Golden Eagles would claim the match win straight set victories at No. 1 and No. 5 doubles and three-set victories at No. 2 and No. 4 singles.
After dropping the first set, Satge tied the match at one set apiece, but couldn't keep the momentum going in a 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 loss in the second position. Arrondo grabbed an early lead, but dropped the final two sets in the fourth position for a 1-6, 7-5, 6-4 loss.
The Warhawks are back in action on Thursday, March 20 when they travel to Natchitoches, La. to face Northwestern State at 2 p.m.
