Box Score MONROE, La. ? Despite enjoying the home court advantage,
the Warhawk women's team couldn't overcome a slow start in falling in the
opening round of the Sun Belt Tennis Championship against Arkansas
State, 4-1, at Heard Stadium on the
campus of ULM.
After a
lengthy rain delay and an hour to dry the courts the Warhawks and ASU were able
to begin play at 3 p.m. Arkansas State (13-9) jumped out early, claiming two of
the three doubles matches before the two squads moved on to singles.
“This was a
tough day to play in with all the delays and the weather,” ULM head coach Terrence De Jongh said. “I
think we were a little tight in the beginning and just couldn't fight our way
out of it. Arkansas
State is a strong team
and unfortunately we couldn't take advantage of a good opportunity.”
Junior
Sharon Makhanya tied the overall score at 1-1 after picking up a 6-3, 6-2
straight set victory at No. 6 singles.
Arkansas State would answer back and take the next
three singles matches to claim the match. ASU picked up wins at No. 3, No. 1
and No. 4, respectively.
ULM ends the season with an 8-13.
“We are so
thankful of the entire athletic department and Bobby Staub for helping us to
host what has already been a great event,” De Jongh said. “Monroe is a great
tennis community and it is wonderful to be able to host this tournament. It is
great for our program to have events like this on campus and I'm sure this
won't be the last.”
