In a hard fought match the ULM tennis team came up on the short end of some
close scores in a 6-1 loss against in-state rival Louisiana-Lafayette at Cajun
Courts in Lafayette, La., on Sunday evening.
“The score doesn't really indicate how close
this match was,” ULM head coach Terrence De Jongh said. “We played much better
today, but came up on the short end of some bounces. We are still juggling our
line-up, but I was proud of our effort today.”
Louisiana-Lafayette (6-8) got on the board
first by picking up wins in two of the three doubles bouts. After falling at
the top spot, the Warhawks evened tandem play with an 8-4 win by senior Marion
Lehmann and sophomore Claire Clark in the third spot.
The Ragin' Cajuns won at number two doubles
to stake an early 1-0 team advantage.
Lehmann quickly knotted the score for ULM
(6-7) by posting a 6-0, 7-5 win at number six singles over Tara Vasovic.
ULL would pull ahead for good, rattling off
wins in the five remaining singles matches. Gutting through a severely injured
shoulder, freshman Vivian Polak took Angela Dangond to the wire at the top
spot, but the Cajun's top player was able to pull out a 6-4, 6-4
match-clinching victory.
After winning the first set, Clark fell in
the second and dropped the tiebreaker in the third singles position for her
first loss of the season. The defeat snaps a stretch of 19-consecutive spring
singles victories for the Bossier City, La., native.
ULM will look to snap a two-game skid ? its
longest of the season ? on Thursday when it returns home to Heard Stadium for a
3:30 p.m. match against in-state foe New Orleans.
