JACKSON, Miss. ? The ULM tennis team ended the season in style, picking up a 6-1 win over Jackson State in dominating fashion in the regular season finale in Jackson, Miss., on Saturday afternoon.

ULM (8-9) closed the regular season by picking up five straight-set wins in singles and sweeping the three doubles slots. The Warhawks were so dominant in tandem play that they dropped only four total games and won by a combined 24-4 margin.

“I am glad we were able to end the season strong,” ULM head coach Terrence De Jongh said. “We had a good performance from pretty much everyone and came one close match shy of winning a 7-0 match. I'm pleased with the way we ended the season with two wins this weekend.”

The Warhawks opened the weekend with a 6-1 victory over Southern University at Raymond Heard Stadium in Monroe on Friday afternoon.

Against Jackson State the Warhawks started strong. Senior Sharon Makhanya and freshman Monica Winkel blasted the tandem of Britney Shy and Paulina Vargas at number one doubles, 8-0. Senior Marion Lehmann and sophomore Claire Clark followed suit with an 8-0 win at number three doubles.

Junior Lena Satge and sophomore Ana Burjaili completed the doubles sweep with an 8-4 win at number two doubles.

“After a slow start in doubles yesterday, I am proud of how we played today,” De Jongh said. “We took care of business early and really set the tone for the match today. We started strong in doubles and were able to carry it over into singles.

Clark kept rolling in individual play and ran her singles record to 16-1 in the spring with a 6-0, 6-1 drubbing of Geneva Warren at number two singles. Lehmann also improved to 16-1 with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Angela Rose at number five singles.

Winkel picked up a commanding 6-1, 6-0 win at number six singles and sophomore Vivian Polak picked up her first collegiate win with a 6-4, 7-5 win at number three singles. Makhanya won at number four singles 6-3, 6-3 to wrap up the Warhawks scoring.

Jackson State was able to avoid the shutout when Vargas picked up a close 6-4, 7-6 win at the top singles position.

ULM returns to action on Thursday when it travels to Denton, Texas, for the opening round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. The Warhawks opponent and first-round time has yet to be determined.
