MONROE, La. --- An annual affair on the ULM athletic calendar, the 2009 Outback Classic enjoyed another successful weekend. Featuring dinner provided by Outback Steakhouse, an auction, and a day on the links, this season's event raised more than $50,000 for the Warhawk men's and women's golf squads.
“This event is vital for our program because it raises about 50 percent of our budget,” ULM director of golf Ashley Tonore said. “The proceeds almost completely cover the cost of our equipment and a lot of our travel expenses to the various tournaments we compete in. Realistically, we wanted to raise around $45,000 this year and, with the help of [former ULM golf coach] Chris Wilson, were able to go even further.”
With all proceeds going directly towards the operation of the program, ULM easily surpassed the previous record high for the annual fundraiser set during last season's Outback Classic.
Moving to the course at Southern Pines on Saturday, a total of 51 teams participated in four flights. Taking home the top honors in the Championship Flight with a score of 52 (-20) was the team of Ryan Nelson, Adam Middleton, Dennis Warner, and Curt Adams.
Angela Drane took home 'Long Drive' honors on the eighth hole, Jimmy Guthrie finished closest to the pin on the second hole and Doug Farr was closest to the mark on the 11th hole.
All told, 204 supporters of the Warhawk program participated in the Saturday day of golf while more than 300 came to the live and silent auctions on Friday night to bid on great items.
“It was very overwhelming the amount of support we received from the community of Monroe,” Tonore said. “I'm very pleased with the way this event unfolded. As a program, we receive so much support from our community and we are just so thankful to everyone who helps make this program and event a success.”
In addition to Outback Steakhouse sponsoring Friday's meal, Marsala Beverage and the Ouachita Coca-Cola Bottling Company provided refreshments on both days.
