Melvin Gibson

Arriving in time for ULM's first year in the GSC, Gibson became the university's first all-conference player as he led the league in scoring at 20.5. As a senior he averaged 19.6, made all-GSC again and helped lead ULM to its first winning season (21-13) as a four-year school. He finished with 1,098 career points and was a great free throw shooter with a season best of 83.0 and career accuracy mark of 78.2.


Tom Miller
The most versatile of all modern day Indian athletes, Miller earned a record 10 varsity letters with four in football, three in track, and three in golf. He was an academic all-American in 1970 and owned all the school punting records when he left, averaging 41.1, 41.2, and 40.5 in his last three years. He also placed in the top four in the GSC pole vault event three times and he was all-conference in golf in 1968 when ULM won the GSC title and he was second individually.


Warren Shanklin
Arriving the year ULM became an independent, Shanklin became ULM's first participant in the NCAA university division championships, tying for 11th as a freshman. He was sixth in the NCAA finals as a junior with a 7-1 finish and also that year set meet, school and state records with a leap of 7-1 1/8 at the USL Relays. He then became ULM's first NCAA national champion as a senior in 1975 when he was the only jumper to clear 7-1 in the rain.
