Women?s Tennis Opens Play at ITA Southern Regional

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The ULM women's tennis team completed the first day of competition at the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships on Friday (Oct. 22). Claire Clark, Monica Winkel and Medy Blankvoort each won singles matches for the Warhawks on the first day of the four-day event.

In the main draw, Clark, the 11th-seeded player in the field, defeated Yvette Vlaar of LSU in the opening round of the main draw. She then fell in a tight three-set match to Viviane Marani of Samford, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6. Winkel also won her first match in the main draw, knocking off Auburn's Taylor Schreimann, 6-3, 6-4. Winkel then fell in round two, 6-0, 6-0, to fifth-seeded Mary Anne MacFarlane of Alabama.

Vivian Polak and Ana Burjaili each lost their first match in the main draw. Polak dropped a 6-4, 6-2 match to Karoline Grymel of Troy while Burjaili fell to top-seeded Kristi Boxx of Ole Miss, 6-0, 6-1. Polak and Burjaili each also fell in their first match in the consolation draw. Polak fell, 6-1, 6-4, to Jackie Kasler of Auburn and Burjaili was beaten 6-1, 6-0 by South Alabama's Alina Volman.

In the 'B' singles draw, Blankvoort had a first round bye before defeating Mia Gordon of UL-Lafayette, 7-6, 7-6. Blankvoort will play Richole Berger of UAB in the 'B' draw quarterfinals. Letha Gaigher dropped her first round matchup in the 'B' singles draw to Emily Mallory of Samford. Gaigher will play Jess Courtnell of South Alabama in the 'B' draw consolation bracket.

Clark and Winkel fell in their first match in the main draw of doubles, 8-3, to MacFarland and Foehse of Alabama. The Warhawk duo will now play Marcovich and Israel of UL-Lafayette in the consolation draw. Polak and Gaigher also lost in the first round of the doubles main draw, falling 8-6 to Schreimann and Kurteva of Auburn. Polak and Gaigher will meet Cape and Romeo of UAB in the consolation draw. 

The Warhawks continue at the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships on Saturday (Oct. 23), play is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m.
