Blankvoort Advances to Semifinals on Day Two of ITA Southern Regional

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Freshman Medy Blankvoort of the ULM women's tennis team advanced to the semifinals of the 'B' draw singles on Saturday (Oct. 23) at the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships. Freshman Letha Gaigher also remains in competition after the second day of the championships.

Blankvoort met UAB's Richole Berger on Saturday in the 'B' draw quarterfinals and earned her way into the semis with a 6-3, 6-3 victory. Blankvoort, who improved her fall singles record to 5-3, will next play Jessica Diamond of Samford in the semifinals.

In the 'B' draw consolation bracket, Gaigher earned a pair of victories on Saturday to reach the consolation semifinals. Gaigher opened the day by defeating Jess Courtnell of South Alabama, 6-0, 7-6. In the quarterfinals, Gaigher upended Jacksonville State's Aleksandra Cmilijic, 6-0, 6-0. Up next for Gaigher is a matchup with Mississippi State's Elizabeth Hall in the consolation semifinals.

In main draw doubles consolation matches on Saturday, both Warhawk duos won their first match of the day before falling in match two. Senior Claire Clark and junior Monica Winkel defeated UL-Lafayette's Marcovich and Israel, 8-3, to begin the day. Clark and Winkel then fell to eighth-seeded Bennett and Kasler of Auburn, 8-5, in the consolation quarterfinals. Gaigher and junior Vivian Polak defeated Cape and Romeo of UAB in their first match on Saturday, 8-3, before dropping an 8-3 decision to Wilson and Morton of LSU.

Blankvoort and Gaigher will return to action for ULM on Sunday in the third day of action at the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships, both Warhawks are scheduled to play at 9 a.m.
