Gaigher Claims Singles Title as Women?s Tennis Concludes Arkansas State Tournament

JONESBORO, Ark. – Letha Gaigher of the ULM women's tennis team earned the flight four singles championship on Sunday (Oct. 3) at the Arkansas State Tournament. Medy Blankvoort and Taylor Shepherd also earned victories on the final day of ULM's first fall tournament of the season.

Gaigher, playing in her first collegiate tournament, defeated Rebecca Van Den Houte of UALR, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, in the championship match of flight four. Gaigher defeated three Sun Belt foes en route to winning the title, knocking off Mckinley Mason of Western Kentucky in the quarterfinals and Ceara Howey of Arkansas State in the semifinals.

Two other Warhawks, Vivian Polak and Ana Burjaili, competed in championship matches on Sunday. Polak fell 6-3, 6-1 to Jenny Herring of Arkansas State in the flight two final and Burjaili came up just short, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, against Biljana Miloshevska of Arkansas State in the final of flight three.

Blankvoort and Shepherd, playing in the back draw finals of their respective flights, each claimed a straight-sets victory on Sunday. Blankvoort earned a decisive 6-0, 6-0 win over Ashton Hartley of Southeastern Missouri in the back draw final of flight two and Shepherd defeated Lauren Schaper of Southeastern Missouri, 6-4, 7-6, in the back draw final of flight five.

ULM will return to action next weekend as it hosts the Warhawk Classic on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 8-9, at Heard Stadium. Full brackets and schedules will be available later in the week.
