Women?s Tennis Downs Arkansas State for Fourth-Straight Win

MONROE, La. – The ULM women's tennis team improved to 8-1 on the season with a 4-3 victory over Arkansas State on Saturday (March 13) at Heard Stadium. The Warhawks won their third-straight match this week against a school from the State of Arkansas and their fourth match overall.

ULM fell behind to start the match as Arkansas State claimed the doubles point with three match wins. At number one doubles, Rone' van Wyk and Elne Barnard downed Claire Clark and Monica Winkel, 8-3. Ana Burjaili and Vivian Polak suffered their first doubles loss of the season at number three doubles as they fell, 8-6, to Jenny Herring and Menna Kamal. The Red Wolves completed the sweep of doubles as Maria Aleman and Ioana Teu bettered Lena Satge and Jourdan Smith, 8-7.

The Warhawks pulled that point back as Clark earned the first victory of the day in singles, earning a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Barnard at number one singles. Winkel then put ULM ahead, 2-1, with a victory at number three singles. Winkel dispatched of van Wyk, 6-2, 6-2. Polak then finished off Aleman at number five singles, 6-0, 6-4, to pull ULM within a point of winning the overall dual.

ULM clinched the match victory as Burjaili won the fourth-straight singles match for the Warhawks, defeating Teu, 6-2, 6-2 at sixth singles.

The final two matches of the day went to Arkansas State. At number four singles, Kamal bettered Bruscato, 6-4, 6-3 and, in the final match, Satge lost a tough, three-set match to Herring, 7-6, 6-7, 10-1, with the dual already decided, a super-tiebreaker was played for the third set.

The Warhawks will take their four-match winning streak to Troy on Friday (March 19). ULM's match against the Trojans is scheduled to begin at noon.
