Women?s Tennis Falls in Close Match at Troy

TROY, Ala. – The ULM women's tennis team saw its four-match winning streak snapped on Friday (March 19) as they fell, 4-3, at Troy. The Warhawks won three singles matches but fell in a tough, three-set final match to drop the dual to the Trojans.

Troy claimed an early 1-0 led by taking all three doubles matches. Karoline Grymel and Leonie Guijt defeated senior Lena Satge and sophomore Jourdan Smith at first singles, 8-1. ULM (8-2) then dropped the final two doubles matches in close 9-8 tiebreakers. Stephanie Vieira and Rosaura Ramirez-Vega defeated junior Ana Burjaili and junior Vivian Polak at third doubles to decide the doubles point before sophomore Monica Winkel and junior Claire Clark fell to Lauren Simpson and Emma Smith.

In singles play, Simpson gave Troy a 2-0 lead with a victory over Satge at second singles, 6-1, 6-0. The Trojans lead went to 3-0 as Emma Smith defeated Jourdan Smith, 6-2, 6-1, at sixth singles.

ULM then won three-straight matches to even the dual, 3-3. Polak got the first victory of the day for the Warhawks with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Vieira at number four singles. Clark then finished off Grymel at number one singles, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, to pull the Warhawks within a point. Winkel's victory at third singles, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, over Guijt tied the contest, 3-3.

In the deciding match, Ramirez-Vega earned a victory over Burjaili at fifth singles in a back-and-forth contest, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.

The Warhawks will return home to Heard Stadium on Monday (March 22) when they meet Stephen F. Austin. The match against the Ladyjacks is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
