Women?s Tennis Cruises Past Delta State

MONROE, La. – The ULM women's tennis team defeated Delta State, the 27th-ranked Division II team in the nation, 6-1, on Friday afternoon (March 5) at Heard Stadium. The Warhawks won five of six singles matches and also earned the doubles point as they improve to 5-1 on the season.

In doubles play, all three matches ended with identical scores of 8-3, with ULM taking the second and third doubles matches and Delta State picking up the victory at first doubles. At second doubles, Monica Winkel and Claire Clark defeated the Delta State duo of Lisa Jamais and Tatiana Bouchaud, Winkel and Clark are now 5-1 as a tandem this spring. Ana Burjaili and Vivian Polak teamed up for a victory over Amandine Gourgues and Lucia Laws at third doubles, Burjaili and Polak are a perfect 6-0 this spring.

Delta State's double victory came thanks to Cecile Benzaki and Laura Mongin over Jourdan Smith and Lena Satge at first doubles.

In singles, Clark made quick work of Jamais at number one singles, 6-1, 6-1. Winkel also cruised to a victory for the Warhawks at fourth singles, 6-1, 6-0 over Mongin. Polak ensured the match victory for the Warhawks with a 6-0, 6-1 win at number five singles, Polak is now 6-0 in singles action this spring. With the match win already assured for ULM, Burjaili kept her perfect spring intact with a 6-4, 6-3 victory at number six singles over Bouchaud.

The final two singles matches of the day each went into third-set, super tiebreakers. At third singles, Sidney Bruscato dropped the first set to Laws, 6-7, before coming back to win set two, 6-4, and earn the win in the super tiebreaker, 10-6. The second singles victory went to Benzaki of Delta State, she took the first set, 6-3, before Satge claimed set two, 4-6, but Benzaki earned the victory in the super tiebreaker, 10-7. 

Up next, the Warhawks will return to the road as they travel to Central Arkansas next Tuesday (March 9) and to UALR next Wednesday (March 10) before returning home to Heard Stadium on Saturday, March 13 for a match with Arkansas State.
