MONROE, La. – The ULM women's tennis team saw its six-match winning streak come to an end on Wednesday (April 14) as it fell, 4-3, to Northwestern State. After dropping the doubles point, the Warhawks fought back to tie the match in singles before falling in the final match of the day.

“It was a pretty good performance by our team,” said ULM head coach Terrance De Jongh. “They are a tough team, a nationally-ranked team, and we played some good tennis but came up just a little bit short. We have played two nationally-ranked teams this season and both matches have been very hard-fought. I would like to thank our fans that came out today, it was a great crowd, and we hope to see everyone back this weekend.”

Junior Ana Burjaili and junior Vivian Polak got the Warhawks off to a positive start with an 8-3 victory at number three doubles over Dragana Colic and Adna Curukovic. Northwestern State (16-1) then evened the doubles as Kathrin Lange and Bianca Schulz bettered freshman Sidney Bruscato and senior Lena Satge at number two, 8-4. With the doubles point hanging on the result at number one, junior Claire Clark and sophomore Monica Winkel dueled Andrea Nedorostova and Martina Rubesova in a marathon tiebreaker. Nedorostova and Rubesova outlasted the ULM duo, 9-8, to claim the doubles point for the Lady Demons.

In the singles, ULM (15-4) got the first point when Olga Bzahanova retired at number one singles to Clark. Bzahanova was trailing 4-1 in the first set when she retired. Schulz gave the advantage back to Northwestern State as she claimed a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Bruscato at number six. Burjaili tied things back up, 2-2, with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Nedorostova at fifth singles.

The Warhawks then took a 3-2 lead when Polak claimed a 7-6, 6-1 win over Lange at fourth singles. Curukovic defeated Winkel, 6-4, 7-6, at number two to even the match once again.

With the result coming down to third singles, Satge and Rubesova took their match to a third set. Rubesova took the first set, 6-1, before Satge knotted the match with a 6-4 win in set two, but Rubesova clinched the victory for Northwestern State with a 6-1 victory in the third set.

The Warhawks will remain at home to close the regular season, hosting Southern Miss on Saturday (April 17) and McNeese State on Sunday (April 18). Both matches are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at Heard Stadium.
