MONROE, La. – The ULM women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to Southern Miss on Saturday (April 17) at Heard Stadium. The Warhawks took the doubles point but then Southern Miss claimed four of the six singles matches to earn the victory.

“We came out well today, taking the doubles point,” said ULM head coach Terrance De Jongh. “But then we played very sloppy in singles. We went behind early in almost every match and that hurt us. Today's performance was not up to par with what we have done throughout the year but we have a chance to get back on track tomorrow with a better performance before we head into the Sun Belt Tournament.”

Southern Miss claimed the first match of doubles action as Stephanie Dellocono and Lauren Gutterman bettered freshman Sidney Bruscato and senior Lena Satge, 8-4, at second doubles. ULM (14-6) evened the doubles as juniors Ana Burjaili and Vivan Polak claimed an 8-4 victory over Zoe Lee and Shannon Rogers at third doubles. Shortly after the finish at number three, junior Claire Clark and sophomore Monica Winkel gave the Warhawks the doubles point as they secured an 8-3 victory over Elja van Berlo and Vroni van Berlo at number one, giving ULM the advantage headed to singles play.

The Golden Eagles took two of the first three singles matches to tie the dual at 2-2. Bruscato claimed a 7-6, 6-4 victory for the Warhawks at number six over Rogers, but Southern Miss earned a 6-0, 6-4 victory from Gutterman over Polak at number four and a 6-3, 6-3 victory at number five by Lee over Burjaili.

Southern Miss then claimed a 3-2 overall lead when Elja van Berlo completed a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Winkel at third singles. The Golden Eagles then clinched the match as Dellocono completed a 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 three-set victory over Satge at number two.

In the final match of the day, Clark pushed her individual singles winning streak to 15 matches with a 6-7, 6-2, 6-3 win over Vroni van Berlo.

The Warhawks will return to the courts at Heard Stadium for the final time this season on Sunday (April 18) as they host McNeese State. The match against the Cowgirls is slated to begin at 11 a.m.
