Women?s Tennis Rolls Past South Alabama in Sun Belt Tournament

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The ULM women's tennis team advanced past South Alabama, 4-0, on Thursday (April 22) in the first round of the Sun Belt Conference tournament. The Warhawks earned the doubles point and the first three singles points to earn the shutout and advance to Friday's quarterfinals.

In doubles play, ULM (16-6) earned a victory at number three via a walkover, as South Alabama (2-13) did not have a team in that position. The Warhawk duo of sophomore Monica Winkel and junior Claire Clark then defeated Katie Welch and Maria Boura, 8-1, at first doubles to clinch the point for ULM. In the other doubles match, freshman Sidney Bruscato and senior Lena Satge trailed Chane Hines and Jess Courtnell, 4-3, when the match was stopped with the doubles point ensured for the Warhawks.

With South Alabama unable to field players at fifth and sixth singles, those positions were forfeited to ULM, giving the Warhawks a 3-0 lead as singles play began. Winkel then clinched the match for the Warhawks with a 6-2, 6-0 victory at over Boura at number two singles. In the three matches remaining when play was halted, Clark was leading Welch, 6-3, 1-3, at first singles, junior Vivian Polak led Jess Courtnell, 6-0, 2-1, at fourth singles and Satge trailed Hines, 2-6, 2-1 at third singles.

The victory advances the Warhawks to Friday's quarterfinals of the Sun Belt Tournament. ULM will face fourth-seeded Troy at 11:30 a.m.
