Women?s Tennis Drops Heartbreaker to FIU in Sun Belt Semifinals

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The ULM women's tennis team pushed 49th-ranked FIU to the brink on Saturday (April 24) before falling, 4-3, in the Sun Belt Conference Semifinals. ULM fell behind early, dropping the doubles point, before coming up just short with three victories in singles.

In the doubles, the Warhawks claimed the first match as the all-conference duo of juniors Vivian Polak and Ana Burjaili bettered Maria Spenceley and Maria Vallasciani, 8-5, at number three. FIU (14-7) evened the doubles as Christine Seredni and Mariana Muci earned an 8-4 victory at second doubles over freshman Sidney Bruscato and senior Lena Satge.

With the doubles point hanging in the balance, FIU's Liset Brito and Priscilla Castillo outlasted sophomore Monica Winkel and junior Claire Clark, 9-7, to give the Golden Panthers the 1-0 advantage.

FIU claimed the first two singles matches to take a 3-0 overall lead. At number six, Vallasciani took a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Bruscato. Castillo then gave FIU its second singles win at number five as she defeated Burjaili, 6-2, 6-4.

ULM (17-7) began its comeback with a victory at number two by Winkel. She got the Warhawks on the board with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Seredni. Clark then picked up a victory over Brito at number one in a duel between two All-Sun Belt players. Clark earned a 6-4, 6-4 win over the 90th-ranked Brito, pulling the Warhawks within a point.

Polak then evened the overall match, 3-3, with a victory at fourth singles. Polak dropped the first set, 2-6, to Spenceley before rebounding to take the final two sets, 6-2, 6-2.

In the final match of the day, Mariana Muci took a 7-6 (9-7), 6-2 decision over Satge at third singles to give FIU the victory.

With the win, FIU advances to the Sun Belt Championship Match on Sunday. ULM's season comes to a close with a 17-7 record and the program's first trip to the Sun Belt Semifinals.
