Men Claim Second, Women Take Third as Cross Country Opens at Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The ULM men's cross country team earned a second-place finish and the ULM women took third as the Warhawks opened the 2010 cross country season on Friday afternoon (September 3) at the 30th Annual Southern Miss Invitational. Junior Moses Chelimo and junior Denise Myers were the top-finishers for ULM in their respective races; each earned sixth-place finishes for the Warhawks.

On the men's side, Chelimo's sixth-place led a group of four ULM runners that earned top-10 finishes, crossing the line in a time of 21:32.17. Following right behind Chelimo, senior Seth Hall came in seventh with a time of 22:07.27 and sophomore Devin Caldwell finished a trio of Warhawks with an eighth-place time of 22:10.91. ULM freshman Jacob Heckford earned 14th in a time of 25:39.77 and sophomore John Grupe rounded out the Warhawks with a 22nd-place finish in 30:09.37.

South Alabama won the men's competition with a score of 18 points, the Warhawks were second with 40 while Xavier (N.O.) took third with 71 and Jackson State was fourth with 84.

Myers was the first of the Warhawk women across the line, finishing with a time of 20:96.94, good for sixth-place overall. Three other ULM runners claimed top-15 finishes as well, led by a 10th-place effort by from sophomore Madeleine Robertson, finishing in 20:43.20. Sophomore Tyler Blacklock finished just behind Robertson in 11th with a time of 21:42.57 and sophomore Lauren Rosson rounded out the top-15 quartet for the Warhawks, claiming 15th, in a time of 22:47.30. Sophomore Ariana Jones also scored for ULM, finishing in 29th-place in a time of 27:26.05.

Host Southern Miss won the women's event with a score of 24, South Alabama took second with 41 and ULM claimed third with 71 points. Xavier (N.O.) finished in fourth with 106 points and Jackson State was fifth, scoring 123 points.

ULM will return to action in two weeks on Friday, September 17, when the Warhawks travel to the UL-Lafayette Invitational in Lafayette, La.
