Box Score DALLAS -- ULM senior Claire Clark led the number two ranked player in the country when the Warhawks match
at No. 27 SMU was called due to darkness with the Mustangs leading 4-0 at the Turpin
Tennis Center Saturday night. Clark and Marta Lesniak split the first two sets
and Clark led 1-0 in the third set when the match was called.
"You don't get too many
opportunities to take on one of the top teams in the country and I thought our
team played well," ULM head coach Terrence De Jongh said. "We learned a lot
from tonight's match even though we lost. We are not going to hold our heads
down -- the season is young and we have just got started."
The Mustangs (2-0) swept all
three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead heading into the six singles
contests. Shahzoda Hatamova pushed the
SMU lead to 2-0 on court four after Vivian Polak was forced to retire after the
first set. Edyta Cieplucha defeated Monica Winkel 6-1, 6-1 on court two and
Aleksandra Malvarchikova handed Letha Gaigher a 6-1, 6-1 setback on court five to
clinch the SMU victory.
Clark, who was ranked 101st
in the NCAA entering the fall season, took the second set 6-2 after dropping
the opening set 6-3. Freshman Medy Blankvoort took the opening set to a
tiebreaker on court three and Ana Burjaili was tied in the second set on court
six when the match was called.
ULM (1-1) will return to the
courts at the Turpin Tennis Center at 10 a.m. Sunday against Texas-Pan
American. The Warhawks open the home portion of their schedule on Thursday when
they host Alcorn State at 2 p.m.
