LAFAYETTE, La. -- The ULM
tennis team dominated the opening day of the Ragin Cajun Tennis Classic as the
Warhawks won nine of their 10 matches on Friday on the campus of UL-Lafayette.
Three of ULM's four singles
players advanced to the semifinals of their respective flights, while both of ULM's
doubles teams won their first round matches.
Friday's action opened with
the opening round of doubles play. ULM's team of Medy Blankvoort and Monica
Winkel easily dispatched of Louisiana Tech's Vivian ten Dolle and Maartje de
Wit 8-2 in A1 Doubles. In A2 Doubles, ULM's Vivian Polak and Isabelle Roche
defeated McNeese State's tandem of Andreea Nenu and Diania Picui 8-4.
The Warhawks carried the
momentum into their opening rounds of singles as all four won their first
match. Blankvoort blanked Sun Belt Conference rival Emily Newton from South
Alabama 6-0, 6-0 in A1 singles, Winkel took down another SBC foe in Middle
Tennessee's Yuri Nomoto 6-4, 6-3 in A2 singles, Polak defeated South Alabama's Chane
Hines 6-2, 7-5 in B1 singles and Rocher dispatched of Northwestern State's
Sardak Dana 6-4, 6-1 also in B1 singles.
Blankvoort continued to roll
with an easy 6-2, 6-0 victory over Lamar's Carolina Salas in the quarterfinal
match of A1. Winkel also moved to the semifinals with a 5-7, 6-2, 10-7 victory
over Southern Miss' Elja Van Berlo, while Polak advanced to her semifinal match
with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Lamar's Alessandra Pennesi. Rocher lost for just the
second time this fall when she fell to MTSU's Alex Dachos 7-6, 6-0.
The Ragin Cajun Classic will
continue on Saturday and conclude on Sunday.
