MONROE, La. - ULM's interim director of golf and head coach Erik
Hsu gained his first signee for the men's golf team on the final day of the
signing period Wednesday when Velten Meyer signed a National Letter of Intent to
join the Warhawks for 2012-13 season.
Meyer has been a successful competitor on the international
circuit, both in Europe as well as the United States and Canada. A back-to-back
champion in his home state in both 2010 and 2011 for the age 16 and 18
classifications, he has earned 11 first-place finishes out of 20 events since
2008 and picked up six additional top-10 results.
The native of Hatten, Germany, participated in the prestigious
World Junior Challenge presented by Golfweek at Innisbrook Golf Resort last
year where after shooting even-par the first two rounds he ended third overall
with 224 total (72-72-80). He also placed 15th overall at the highly
competitive United States Junior Masters in 2010.
In 2011, Meyer earned medalist honors at the GVNB Order of
Merit international tournament after shooting a three-over-par total of 219
(74-70-75). He fired a one-under-par 71 to become the 2011 Men's Club Champion
at his home course and led his team to third place at the German Team
Championships (and finished first individually) by also carding 71.
Meyer racked up four first place results out of six events in
2010 and finished in the top-three of the two which he didn't win, including the
World Junior Challenge. Notably, he earned first place at the Youth Championships
Isernhagen and the OLB Cup before earning his first of two Club Championships.
Since 2008 the German golfer has shot 15 rounds at even par
or better, 12 of which were sub-par including two in the 60s. During the
current season, Meyer has averaged 74.76 strokes per round through 13
tournaments.
The ULM men's golf team resumes the 2011-12 season Feb. 20-21,
2011 at the Rice Intercollegiate in Houston, Texas.
