MONROE, La. - ULM swept all three doubles matches and won five-of-six singles matches to breeze past Central Arkansas 6-1 Friday afternoon in the Warhawks home opener at Heard Stadium.
"I
am proud of the way our team came out and played today," head coach
Terrence De Jongh said. "It has been nearly three weeks since we last
played, but you couldn't tell by watching our ladies out there. We have
another tough match tomorrow against a Southern team that defeated Southern Miss last week."
The
duo of Claire Clark and Monica Winkel did not drop a game on court two,
while Ana Burjaili and Vivian Polak cruised to an 8-1 victory on court
three to wrap up the doubles point for the Warhawks (3-1). Letha
Gaigher and Medy Blankvoort completed the sweep with an 8-4 victory on
court one.
The
dominating play continued as the teams switched over to singles. ULM's
players on the first four courts dropped just a combined six games en
route to straight-set victories. Clark improved to 41-2 in dual match
singles over the past three seasons with a 6-0, 6-1 on court one, while
Burjaili remained unbeaten on the season with a 7-5, 6-3 win on court
five.
Gaigher
turned in the most dominating performance with a perfect 6-0, 6-0
victory on court four. Winkel won 6-0, 6-3 on court two, while Polak
won 6-1, 6-1 on court three. Alex Rios picked up the only point of the
day for Central Arkansas (0-4) with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at number six.
The Warhawks have a quick turnaround as they play host to Southern Saturday at 11 a.m. Admission to all matches at Heard Stadium is free.
