ULM Tennis Turns in Solid Effort on Opening Day of NSU Invitational

NATCHITOCHES, La. -- ULM won its first four singles matches and split its two doubles matches in the opening round of the NSU Invitational hosted by Northwestern State -- it is the first tournament of the fall for the Warhawks.

Sophomore Medy Blankvoort defeated Southern Miss' Kate Lanier 6-2, 6-1 to advance in Flight One singles. Blankvoort then dropped a three-set thriller; 3-6, 6-2, 10-7; to Tereza Bekerova from Stephen F. Austin. Senior Vivan Polak opened Flight Two singles with a 2-6, 6-4, 10-8 victory over Lamar's Alessandra Pennesi before falling 6-1, 7-6 to Malena Gordo from SFA in the second round.

Senior Monica Winkel dispatched of Northwestern State's 7-6, 6-2 in the opening round of Flight Three singles and will play her semifinal match on Saturday morning. Sophomore Isabella Rocher, a transfer from New Mexico State, advanced to the championship match in Flight Four with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Haley Acuna from UL-Lafayette in a semifinal match after she received a first-round bye.

In doubles, Blankvoort and Winkel defeated the team of Jelene Czudek and Carolina Maso from Lamar 8-4 in Flight One, while Polak and Rocher fell 8-1 to the team of Sandra Ahiquist and Hannah Appleyard from ULL in Flight Two.

Play begins at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the Jack Fisher Tennis Center.
