MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - The ULM men's track & field squad
finished off a solid first day at the Indoor Sun Belt Championships in third
place with a team total of 30 points. The Warhawks trail Western Kentucky
(43.50 points) and UL-Lafayette (35.50 points) entering the final day of action.
The Warhawks got a trio of second-place finishes on the day,
including junior Clint Broussard in the high jump, senior Derek Dark in the
shot put and the 4,000-meter distance medley team.
Broussard got ULM started with a best mark of 2.00 meters to
earn a runner-up finish in the men's high jump, just behind Sander Maes of
UL-Lafayette (2.05 meters).
Dark had a best mark of 16.62 meters in the men's shot put
to earn second place and add eight more points to the Warhawks.
The men's 4,000-meter distance medley team of Devin
Caldwell, Jacob Heckford, Jamel Sams and Daniel Mutai wrapped up the night with
a time of 10:16.45 to earn runner-up honors.
In addition, Mutai set a school record in the men's 3,000-meter
run with a time of 8:20.08 -- finishing in fourth place. All three runners in
front of Mutai broke the Sun Belt Championship record in the event, which dated
back to 1992.
On the women's side, junior Danielle O'Donnell set the
school record and earned fifth place in the pentathlon with 3,506 points. The
women enter the final day in 11th place with four points.
Both teams will wrap up action at the Indoor Sun Belt
Championships on Sunday.
