Warhawks Take a Pair of Titles at Golden Eagle Classic

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Junior Daniel Mutai (1,500-meter run) and senior Marcie Richard (Javelin) each earned wins as the ULM track & field team wrapped up competition at the Golden Eagle Classic Saturday in its final tune-up before the Sun Belt Outdoor Championships in two weeks.

Mutai cruised to a victory in the 1,500, defeating second-place finisher Max Miller by more than four seconds. Freshman Silah Chumbai also had a strong showing with a third-place finish in 4:07.85.

Richard just missed her season-best mark with a best throw of 140-03 (42.76) to win the women's javelin. It marked Richard's second victory of the season in the javelin.

The Warhawks got a pair of top-3 finishes in the men's shot put as senior Derek Dark placed second (53-11/16.43) and senior Preston Dark took third (50-7.50/15.43).

In the women's high jump, junior Danielle O'Donnell finished second with a personal best jump of 5-10 (1.78). The mark improves O'Donnell to second place on the Sun Belt performance list.

Other top performances on the day included a second-place finish for the women's 4X400-meter relay team (3:52.13), a third-place finish from freshman Tyreca Jackson in the women's 1,500 (4:56.78) and a season-best performance from senior Keyon Jones in the men's 400-meter dash (47.91).

The Warhawks are back in Action May 11-13 at the Sun Belt Outdoor Championships in Lafayette, La.
