LAFAYETTE, La. - Three women competitors paced the Warhawks
with top-five finishes during the first day of the 2012 Sun Belt Conference
Outdoor Championships Friday at the Ragin' Cajuns Track Facility Friday hosted
by UL-Lafayette.
The beginning of the championship was delayed during the morning
hours due to inclement weather in the Lafayette, La., area.
Jade Thomas secured the Warhawks' highest finish of the day,
a second place result, in the 200 meter dash with a time of 25.14 to finish just
behind South Alabama's Lindsay Schwartz who took first place (24.50). Thomas also
finished sixth in the 100 meter hurdles (14.94), which beat her season best.
In the pole vault, Kirby Newcomb tied for third place among
the women with a 3.41m (11-2.25) result which defeated her career-low mark of
3.43m at the LSU Alumni Gold on April 21.
Danielle O'Donnell also claimed top-10 finishes in the high
jump in fourth place with a 5-03.25 (1.61m) jump and a seventh place 34-08.50 result
in the shot put (10.58m).
Jennifer Goss ended seventh in the women's discus throw,
which beat her season best, by tossing 124-10 (38.06m).
The lowest finisher for the men on the first day of the Sun
Belt Championships was Preston Dark, who finished ninth overall with a 159-10
(48.73m) throw in the discus.
