DES MOINES, Iowa - ULM junior Daniel Mutai was unable to
complete the men's 10,000-meter run Wednesday at the NCAA Outdoor Track &
Field Championships. Mutai pulled out the race midway through with pain in his
knee.
Southern Utah's Cameron Levin ran a time of 28:07.14 to win
the national title in the event. It marked the first ever track & field
national title in the school's history. Stephen Sambu of Arizona (28:09.52) and
Chris Derrick of Stanford (28:17. 28) rounded out the top three.
Mutai, a native of Kapsabet, Kenya, entered the night with
the 23rd fastest time in the nation in the event this season. He also owns the
ULM school record with a best time of 29:10.20 at the Stanford Invitational
earlier this season.
The ULM men's track & field team has put together quite
a run over the past five years under head coach J.D. Malone. The Warhawks have
qualified six athletes for the NCAA Championship during that stretch, including
a pair of first team All-Americans - Luther Ambrose in the 100m and Kyle Kent
in the javelin. In addition, Richard McKay garnered second team All-America
honors last season with a 13th place finish at nationals.
McKay, who recently finished up his career with the
Warhawks, will compete in the javelin at the USA Olympic Trials June 22-30 in
Eugene, Ore.
