The ULM men's and women's cross country teams have
announced their schedules for the 2012 season. Both teams will compete at four meets
leading up to the Sun Belt Conference Championships, which will be hosted by
Western Kentucky on October 27th in Bowling Green, Ky.
“Our cross country schedule gives us the chance to
progress through the season, developing our runners while also competing
against national class competition,” said veteran cross country/track and field
head coach J.D. Malone. “Our athletes are excited to see how they stack up
against the best in the southern United States at the Chile Pepper Festival and
the NCAA South Central Regional.”
The men's schedule is highlighted by the annual trip to
the Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival, one of the largest cross country meets
in the country. The event features a field of over 80 teams and close to 5,000
runners. This marks the third time in the last four years that the Warhawk
harriers will travel to the University of Arkansas to compete at the elite
meet.
The season will also feature the running of the Warhawk
Invitational, which will be hosted by ULM at the Selman Golf Course in Monroe
on September 7th at 6:15 p.m. The event featured a Warhawk sweep last year,
with both the men's and women's teams claiming overall victories.
The season kicks off for both teams at the McNeese Relays
in Lake Charles, La. on August 31 at 5 p.m. The race features a unique two man
relay system over a 6,000 meter course. Warhawk seniors Silah Chumba and Daniel
Mutai combined to win the meet a year ago, covering the course in 17:09 to win
by four seconds. The ULM women's team was led by a ninth place finish from graduated
senior Denise Meyers and Sharon Sason, who returns to lead the team this year.
