Sand Volleyball Splits First Matches

Beach Volleyball

COCOA BEACH, Fla. - The ULM sand volleyball squad split its first matches Saturday in the Ron Jon Surf Shop Beach 'n' Boards Fest. The Warhawks (1-1) began the day with a 4-1 loss to North Florida but earned their first-ever victory over Jacksonville later in the day, also a 4-1 decision.

MATCH ONE - North Florida 4, ULM 1

ULM fell 4-1 to North Florida (1-1) in its first ever sand volleyball match Saturday morning.

The lone point came from top pair Tetiana Sukach and Zuzanna Markova 2-1 victory over  Dagnija Medina and Anna Budinska (21-16. 18-21, 17-15).

ULM dropped a close match at the second flight. Michelle McNamee and Amy Grabiec took the first set 21-17 from the Ospreys duo of Carolyn Jenkins and Cari Whitmire but dropped the final two sets 21-18 and 16-14.

MATCH TWO - ULM 4, Jacksonville 1

The Warhawks grabbed rallied to edge Jacksonville 4-1 on Saturday evening. Sukach and Markova got their second win of the day in a 2-0 sweep.

Alannah Cullum, Iren Marinova, Maria Garcia, Grabiec and McNamee each earned their first victories in the night cap over the Dolphins (0-2).

"It was fantastic to get a win on our first day of NCAA sand volleyball. In the morning match, we showed some jitters, but we learned some tricks for playing in the wind and the afternoon went much better. [Grabiec and McNamee] had a great performance after coming within a point of winning this morning. There's no time to celebrate, though, with two matches tomorrow," head sand volleyball coach David Fischer said.

Both head volleyball coaches made the trip and were pleased with the Warhawks' performance.

"It was great to see the girls bounce back from the morning match and play so well. We were focused and executed solid game plans from team one all the way to team 5. It's great to see the girls support each other and have so much fun playing volleyball," said indoor head coach and director of volleyball operations Patrick Hiltz said.

ULM resumes play in the Ron Jon Surf Shop Beach 'n' Boards Festival tomorrow against Stetson and Webber.
