MIRAMAR, Fla. – ULM senior Daniel Mutai finished second in the men's 10,000-meter run to lead the ULM track & field team on day one of the Sun Belt Championships Friday at the Ansin Sports Complex.
Mutai, who qualified for the NCAA Championships in the event last season, finished just behind Western Kentucky's Joseph Chebet in a time of 31:32.52 to earn the Warhawks eight team points. He was the only ULM men's athlete to compete in a final on a light first day of competition.
The multi-events also got started Friday with sophomore Isaac Grieder in fourth place in the decathlon with a total of 3,493 points. Freshman Jonathan Mack sits in ninth place in the competition with 3,211 points.
On the women's side, senior Danielle O'Donnell is in sixth place in the heptathlon with a first-day total of 2,842 points. O'Donnell's highlight came in the high jump where she won with a season-best leap of 1.71 meters.
Action continues tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. with the continuation of the decathlon and heptathlon, and finals in the men's and women's long jump, men's and women's shot put, women's high jump and men's and women's 3,000-meter steeplechase.
