GREENSBORO, N.C. – ULM sophomore Jamel Sams is among the 24 athletes advancing to the quarterfinals in the 400-meter hurdles at the NCAA East Preliminary Championships.
The Longview, Texas, native clocked a time of 52.02 to finish 20th out of 48 athletes competing Thursday on the first day of competition at Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T. It's the second fastest time of Sams' career.
Mississippi State's Scottie Hearns won the competition with a time of 50.63, competing in the same heat as Sams.
Junior Martin Solomon also competed in the 400 hurdles for the Warhawks, but came up short of advancing to the quarterfinals as he finished in 40th place with a time of 53.50. It caps a successful first season for Solomon, who was one of the top performers in the Sun Belt in both the 110 and 400 hurdles all season.
Sams moves on to the quarterfinal round Friday at 6:45 p.m. CT. The top 12 finishers will move on to the NCAA Championships June 5-8 in Eugene, Ore.
