TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Sophie Rufyikiri and Petra Horakova garnered another doubles win to advance to the quarterfinals of the USTA/ITA Southern Regional Championships on Saturday at the Alabama Tennis Stadium.
Day One
The day began with doubles. As with the previous tournament in Waco, Texas, Rufyikiri and Horakova continued to play well together. In the first match, the duo knocked off Carolin Drescher and Alex Kitchen (USM) 8-2. The pair then went on to defeat McNeese State's Klaudia Gawlik and Sarah Jurakova 8-5 to advance to the round of 16 on Saturday, where they will face Mississippi State's Georgiana Patrasc and Naomi Tran at 9:00 a.m.
Rufyikiri also improved her singles record to 7-1 for the fall as she topped UAB's Rachel Daniell 7-5, 6-2. The senior will face Alabama's Maya Jansen on Saturday in the round of 32.
Freshmen Amy Olivier and Jana Duhanova fought hard but were unable to overcome Lisa Schneider and Elena Roca as they fell 8-7 (5).
Duhanova split her matches as she beat Polina Ivanova (NWS) 6-3, 6-2 in the first match but lost to Alabama's Aryn Green 6-1, 6-2 in the round of 64.
Horakova battled hard but was ultimately defeated 1-6, 6-1, 6-2 by Auburn's Andie Dikosavljevic, while Olivier dropped a 6-0, 6-3 decision to Tulane's Naz Karagoz.
Day Two
Rufyikiri and Horakova split their doubles matches for the day as they defeated Mississippi State's Georgiana Patrasc and Naomi Tran 8-3 to advance to the quarterfinals, but then fell 8-7 (2) to LSU's Noel Scott and Joana Vale Costa. This trip to the quarterfinals is the furthest a ULM doubles pair has advanced at the USTA/ITA Regional Championships under head coach Terrence De Jongh.
Amy Olivier and Jana Duhanova battled hard but suffered an 8-5 loss to Marija Milutinovic and Allie Robbins of Ole Miss.
In singles, Petra Horakova retired to give Jackson State's Daria Butorina a victory, while Amy Olivier dropped a 7-5, 4-6, 10-6 decision to Marie Aubert (NSU).
Rufyikiri could not overcome Alabama's Maya Jansen as she fell 6-4, 7-5.
