CALHOUN, La. -- The ULM men's golf team finished in first place in both team and individual competition in the ULM/Wallace Jones Invitational, hosted by ULM.
This was the second team win in a row for the Warhawks and first career individual win for Velten Meyer.
“The guys played very well today,” said head coach Walt Williams.
ULM finished under par in the final round of play, with a 4-under 284, to grab the top spot in a strong 14-team field with an 870. The Warhawks finished 11 strokes in front of second-place team UALR.
“UALR made a big run at us and caught us early in the round but our guys took the Trojans' best shot and answered on the back nine and pulled away at the end for an 11 shot win,” said Williams.
Four of the five golfers on the ULM team finished individual competition in the top 10.
Velten Meyer led the way with a final score of 5-under 211 and the first place spot out of 70 competitors. Meyer was followed by Calum Hill (219), who finished in a tie for third, Mason Seaborn (220) in a tie for fifth and Greg Smail (222) in a tie for ninth. Charlie Macneal rounded out the group, posting a 226 and finishing in a tie for 18th.
“Velten was spectacular in getting his first individual win with a -5 total on a tough course and Calum was close behind in 3rd!” said Williams.
The ULM 'B' team ended the tournament in 11th place after carding a 933. Blake Traweek had a strong performance to finish in front with a 7-over 223 and in a tie for 11th on the individual leaderboard.
“We will take a day off to rest and then get back to work preparing for the Texas State Invitational,” said Williams.
The Warhawks return to action in their final tournament before the Sun Belt Championships, the Texas State Invitational, scheduled to begin April 7th.
