CALHOUN, La. -- The ULM men's golf team put on an impressive performance to end the day atop both team and individual leaderboards in the ULM/Wallace Jones Invitational.
The Warhawks carded a 12-over 300 in the first round, followed by a strong 2-under 286 in the second to take the top spot from fellow Sun Belt team UALR.
“We played poorly as a team in the first round, although Velten had a good round,” head coach Walt Williams said, “UALR played well and had us in a pretty big hole.”
After the first round of play, Velten Meyer led the Warhawks with an even 72. Charlie Macneal was just three strokes behind with a 3-over 75, followed by Calum Hill (76), Greg Smail and Mason Seaborn, who both carded a 77.
“We played very well in the afternoon round and Velten played even better,” said Williams.
Meyer moved up to the top spot in individual competition after shooting a 3-under 69 in the second round. Calum Hill joined him in the top 10 after carding an even 72.
The ULM 'B' team ended the first round in 11th place on the team leaderboard after shooting a 315 and then moved up three spots after carding a 306 to finish the day in eighth place.
Blake Traweek led the ULM 'B' team, finishing the first two rounds with a 5-over 149.
“We look to play solid tomorrow and get a second win in two weeks!” said Williams.
The final round of the tournament will begin Tuesday morning with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
