SIESTA KEY, Fla. -- The ULM sand volleyball program had an outstanding day in opening round play at the Fiesta on Siesta Key in South Florida.
The Warhawks' top pairs of Marcela Araya and Zuzana Markova and Blanca Ocana and Michelle McNamee went a combined 5-1 on the day. Araya and Markova suffered the lone loss, falling to an FIU tandem that finished fourth nationally last season in three sets.
Meanwhile, Hadley Swartz and Hope Pawlik at No. 3 and Alannah Cullum and Rachel Arnason at No. 4 both went 2-1 in pool play.
Kaitlyn Shearer and Celine Flores went 1-2 on the day at the number five spot. All three pairs won one more match in single-elimination format but were eliminated in the next round.
The top two pairs await bracket play tomorrow when they will be seeded for the Fiesta on Siesta championship.
“That's quite an accomplishment with so many Division I schools attending,” head sand volleyball coach David Fischer said.
