Track & Field

MONROE, La. – With huge performances at the Sun Belt Conference Championships, Jamel Sams from the ULM men's track & field team and Samantha Hamby from the softball program earned the final respective Warhawk of the Week honors of spring, 2014.

Sams was named to the All-Conference First-Team after becoming ULM's top scorer in the conference meet with 18 points. The junior saved his best for last as he won his first race of the season in the 400m hurdles. Sams was also a part of a second-place 4x400m relay team.

The Longview, Texas native clocked in at a season-best 52.19 in the 400m hurdles to leg out the victory. It topped his preliminary time of 53.03 from the day before, which would have only been good for fifth in the finals. In the relay, Sams ran the second-leg of a season-best 3:10.58 time.

Sams becomes the third different Warhawk Male of the Week winner for the track & field program in the last four weeks as they finished the season strong. He will now await to see if his times qualify for NCAA Regionals on May-29-31 in Jacksonville, Fla.

In the circle, Hamby played an integral part in the softball program's run to the SBC semi-finals. She picked up three wins in her four starts and allowed just six earned runs in 21.0 innings. Hamby held opponents to a .160 batting average in her five appearances.

The senior from Monroe, La., helped lead the Warhawks to their most post-season victories since the 2008 season. She picked up wins against seventh-seeded Troy, fourth-seeded WKU and third-seeded Georgia State. Her three wins came in a league ranked fourth in the nation in conference RPI.

Hamby finished the season with a winning record of 17-16. She earned Warhawk Female of the Week accolades for the second time in the last three weeks. Additionally, Hamby was named to the SBC All-Tournament team.
