GULF SHORES, Ala. -- The ULM sand volleyball program's Zuzana Markova and Marcela Araya split the day's competition but took first place in Pool A at the AVCA National Collegiate Sand Volleyball Championships.
The Warhawk duo grabbed a 2-0 win over Jacksonville's Taylor Nyquist and Sammie Strausbaugh, 21-18, 21-7. ULM's tandem ended the day with a 2-0 setback against Long Beach State's Delainey Aigner-Swesey and Bojana Todorovic. The 49ers took the sets 21-16, 21-17.
“In a big-time match against Jacksonville, 'Mar-Z' put together a dominating performance, scoring points in bunches. With the 2-0 win, we were guaranteed to pool out first, even before we played LBSU. We tried to fire up for that match, but with (the 49ers) needing that win to (stay alive), their motivation was a bit stronger,” head sand volleyball coach David Fischer said.
Markova and Araya went 3-1 in Pool A and they were 6-2 in sets played.
“Now we await the seeding committee to know who we get to play in the single-elimination pairs championship,” Fischer said.
