NEW ORLEANS - Tiffany Mylonas completed a sweep of her Flight 3 bracket and Patricia Villar rallied to win the consolation pool in hers as the Warhawks concluded their fall season at the Big Easy Tennis Classic.
Mylonas' 7-5, 6-3 victory over Emma Olina (Barry) in the final gave her a second flight victory of her first collegiate fall season (UCA Invitational, Sept. 25-26).
"She was up 4-3 in the first and 3-1 in the second set," Mylonas said. "I didn't have to play extraordinarily well, I just had to play deep, high and cross court."
Mylonas, a freshman from Brussels, says she understands how difficult collegiate athletics can be.
"I came to the USA to become the player I always wanted to be, so I will work hard because I am determined at 100,000 percent."
Villar had to win three matches on Saturday to claim the consolation bracket, and she got better as the day went on. She opened with a 6-1, 3-6, 10-3 win over Xavier's Brandi Nelson, followed by a 6-1, 6-7, 10-1 decision over Cecilia Mercier (Southeastern Louisiana).
From there, Villar eliminated Troy's Tereza Melicharkova 6-1, 6-2 to be the last one standing. She had lost in the consolation final at the ITA Regionals the previous weekend (with her semifinal win coming against Melicharkova), but adjusted to end the fall season on a good note.
"These last few months, I have adapted to the way of life, training and people because it is so much different than in Spain," Villar said. "I am enjoying this experience, and if you work hard you can get things."
The team's first spring match is slated for Jan. 23 against Jacksonville State in Hattiesburg, Miss.
