MONROE, La. – The Warhawks picked up a pair of wins Friday at the Pelican Classic as the ULM Sand Volleyball team knocked off No. 17 Tulane, 3-2, before shutting out Spring Hill College, 5-0.
“Wow! What a gutsy performance by all of our pairs,” head coach David Fischer said.
ULM earns its third win in a row to improve to 4-1 on the season.
Game 1
Taylor Zaeske and Kaitlyn Shearer got the scoring started with a 21-17, 21-12 win at the No. 4 slot to tie the match at 1-1.
Marcela Araya clinched a crazy back-and-forth third set, 30-28, to give the Warhawks their second point.
“At the 1s, Marcela and Michelle could have given up down 19-15 in the first set, but they hung in there and stole it,” Fischer added. “The 2nd set was just some great volleyball, with Tulane fending off several match points until we took it 30-28.”
With the dual tied at 2-2, Katie Lindstrom and Hope Pawlik dominate the No. 2 showdown to clinch the match and give the Warhawks their first win over a ranked opponent on the season.
“Katie and Hope played some steady ball against a couple of talented freshmen from California,” Fischer said. “In the end, Hope took control at the net and Katie made some great digs to seal a nail-biter of a dual.”
Game 2
After an intense battle against Tulane in the first match, ULM went out and completely took over the match against Spring Hill College.
Duos McNamee and Araya and Shearer and Zaeske remained undefeated with their fifth dual wins of the season.
Rachel Arnason and Celine Flores picked up a victory at the No. 5 slot for their first dual competition victory of the season.
ULM is back in action Wednesday on the road when the Warhawks travel to compete against New Orleans.
