ATLANTA, Ga. - The Warhawks split Friday's doubleheader when the ULM Sand Volleyball team shutout College of Charleston after dropping a 4-1 decision to No. 7 Georgia State in the Southeast Sand Slam event on the GSU Sand Courts.
“All in all, I'm really happy with how ULM is performing so far here at the GSU Sand Courts,” head coach David Fischer. “The 75-degree weather and sunshine doesn't hurt either.”
Game 1
In the first dual of the tournament, ULM (9-4) was unable to swing the momentum its way as Georgia State (18-1) controlled the tempo from the get-go.
At the No. 2 slot, Katie Lindstrom and Hope Pawlik were able to come from behind and pick up the Warhawks lone point of the match. After dropping the first set, 22-20, the duo collected back-to-back wins of 21-16 and 15-11.
Marcela Araya and Michelle McNamee went back-and-forth with Majda Dostalova and Milani Pickering at the top spot but fell in three sets.
Game 2
ULM bounced back against College of Charleston (1-9) with a 5-0 win to pick up their ninth win of the season.
“Obviously, it's nice to get the 5-0 win over C of C. The rest of this weekend, we'll see how some of our pairs do playing "up" or "down" a few spots,” Fischer said.
Once again Lindstrom and Pawlik were able to take care of business as the pair dominated their competition 21-14, 21-11 for their second win of the day.
“Katie and Hope beat a tough GSU team this morning, and they stayed perfect through the C of C dual,” Fischer added. “They're a great ball-control team, and as we discovered last weekend, Hope has a nice jump serve. With the swirling winds coming through today, it was a great point-scoring weapon. Also, with Katie's experience at scouting and strategizing, we the coaches were able to focus on the other courts and let them take care of business.”
At the No. 5 pair, Kaitlyn Shearer and Taylor Swartz breezed past Krissy Mummey and Megan Quigley, 21-14, 21-18 to improve to 11-2 on the year.
“Kaitlyn and Taylor have been having so much success at the 5s,” Fischer said. “It is going to be fun to see how they handle other schools' 4s.”
Alannah Cullum and Claire Crossfield scored a point when the duo won 21-18, 21-17 at the threes, while Hadley Swartz and Bayleigh Hoffman collected a win at the No. 4 position.
The Warhawks are back in action at the GSU Sand Courts tomorrow for the Individual Pairs Tournament.
