BATON ROUGE, La. – The ULM tandem of
Otto Van Buynder and
Andoni Etchenique, who wrapped up the opening round of play tied for fourth and 10th, respectively, helped place the Warhawks in a three-way tie for third at the David Toms Intercollegiate at The University Club on Saturday, Oct. 6. The 14 participating teams were scheduled to play 36 holes on Saturday, but the second round was halted due to weather and darkness and will resume at 8 a.m. on Sunday, with the third round to begin immediately afterward.
The Warhawks, who have a team score of 5-over-par 295, are tied with Mercer and the LSU "B" Team for third. Host LSU's "A" unit leads all team scores through the opening round with a 12-under-par 282. The Ragin' Cajuns are in second, three strokes off the pace established by the Tigers.
Van Buynder capitalized on six birdies and eight pars to finish with a 2-under-par opening round 70. The South African freshman recorded four of those six birdies on the front nine as he established his two-stroke advantage. Van Buynder completed the first six holes of the second round, emerging with three birdies and a 1-under-par score for the round.
Etchenique positioned himself in a tie with ULL's Charlie Flynn for 10th after completing the opening round with an even par 72. Etchenique's first-round card included a team-best seven birdies, three coming inside the first seven holes of the day, along with six pars. He is 1-under-par through seven holes of the second round, enjoying one birdie, one eagle and three pars along the way.
Max Catherine closed out the opening round with a 3-over-par 75, locking himself in a four-way tie for 39th place. Catherine's scorecard included three birdies, which came on the fifth, 11th and 17th holes, and 10 pars. Through the first eight holes of the second round, Catherine is 2-over-par with six pars to his credit.
Joao Girao put together the fourth-best performance of any Warhawk in the first round, finishing with a 6-over-par 78. Girao's only holes of under par, which resulted in a birdie, came on the sixth and ninth holes. However, he concluded the opening round of play with 10 pars. Girao settled his nerves in the second round, opening with five pars in his first five holes before ending play with a birdie at six, shaving one stroke off his first-round score.
Keegan McLachlan rounds out the Warhawk team where he sits in a six-way tie for 63rd after the first 18 holes. He closed the round with 11 pars, posting seven in his first nine holes. In the first seven holes of the second round, McLachlan has recorded four pars and his first birdie of the tournament and will begin Sunday at 1-over-par.
