MONROE, La. – The Warhawk beach volleyball team is looking for its second-straight win this weekend (Mar.2-3) as they travel to New Orleans for UNO's Beach Volleyball Invitational.
"We are excited to compete again this weekend, especially in our home state," said newly named head coach
Russ Friedland. "We'll get to see four new teams this weekend and we're ready to go to battle again!"
ULM (1-3) is still fresh in the 2018 season, as it returned home from its first tournament of the season at the Horned Frog Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas just last weekend.
The Warhawks dropped the first three matches to Houston Baptist (1-4), Florida International (1-4), and TCU (0-5).
Against HBU and FIU duo
Catherine Griffith and
Rebecca Brown walked away with ULM's only wins, defeated their opponents (21-19, 26-24) and (21-19,12-21, 15-11) respectively.
ULM would make sure to leave Fort Worth with a win in their pockets, sweeping Texas A&M – Kingsville 5-0.
Juniors
Allie Kemp and
Bailey Smith dominated their first set against A&M-Kingsville's Haley Hutchinson and Loren Washington. In the first set, Kemp and Smith defeated their opponents, 21-8.
Kemp and Smith kept the momentum rolling into set two, and despite being down 16-17, battled back to win set two (21-17), earning ULM its first point of the day.
The Warhawks went on to win the remaining four contests, giving ULM a win to take back home to Monroe.
This weekend in New Orleans, ULM will start with a Friday morning match-up against host-team University of the New Orleans. They will close out play on Friday with an evening game against Austin Peay.
On Saturday (Mar.3) the Warhawks will face Jacksonville State and 2 p.m. and then Spring Hill 3 p.m.
