MONROE, La. –
The ULM track and field team played host to the Warhawk Classic on Saturday (April 14) and in the process earned 49 Top 10 and six first-place finishes. The Warhawks had 44 participants in the 28 total events, with those individuals placing at least 24th or better in their respective event.
 
"I was very glad that we were able to host this meet for our student-athletes," ULM head track and field coach J.D. Malone said. "This is the first home meet any of our seniors have had in their careers. Our facility is great and I'm very pleased with it. We also had a great turnout by our alumni. Despite the less than perfect weather, I think everyone had a very good experience today at Groseclose Track."
 
Among the six first-place performances was Eric Hawkins, who ended the 400-meter dash in a time of 49.41. Hawkins was one of two Warhawks to finish among the top five in the event along with Andre Johnson (49.87), who claimed fourth.
 
Teammate Elias Keter earned a first-place finish in the men's 1500 meters at 4:07.08, while Lavaughn Battick brought home first place in the men's 110-meter hurdles after clocking a time of 14.45.
 
Jemal Parharm was the top finisher in the men's long jump event with a leap of 24-7, which came on his first attempt of the day. Parharm held off stiff competition from Tamario Lattiin, competing unattached from Louisiana Tech, who finished second at 24-3 3/4.
 
ULM's Alton Clay earned first place in the men's hammer throw with a toss of 207-8. Clay, the only participant to exceed 200 feet in the competition, secured the top spot in his fourth attempt of the event. Clay also was responsible for a second-place showing in the discus throw, following a toss of 164-9 and a fifth-place finish in the shot put, which reached a distance of 52-10 3/4.
 
Cole McKnight was the top men's finisher in the javelin throw with a heave of 195-1. McKnight, who enjoyed his longest toss of the day on his fourth attempt, edged out Collin Milton (Northwestern State) by two inches for first place after Milton lead through three rounds. The Warhawks had a total of three top-five finishers in men's javelin, including Mason Nicholas (180-5) and Austin Walker (166-8) placing fourth and fifth, respectively.
 
The top women's finisher for the Warhawks was Kourtni Russell, who crossed the line in second in the 100-meter hurdles (14.54). Russell was edged out by 0.02 seconds by Northwestern State's Jasmine Frazier for first place. Ava Paul also reached the podium for the Warhawks as she crossed the line third in a time of 14.75.
 
ULM had multiple top five finishers in the men's 400-meter hurdles as Zach Kilpatrick finished second in a time of 54.55. He was joined by Austin McBain, who crossed the line fifth in 56.31.
 
Angela Jepchirchir was one of seven Warhawks to place third on Saturday, as she wrapped up the women's 800-meter run in a time of 2:23.88. Her teammate Edith Jebet also was third in the women's 3000-meter run a time of 10:46.36. In the men's 3000-meter run, ULM's Elias Keter (8:54.52) and Brandon McDonald (9:02.72) finished third and fourth, respectively.
 
Hayden Holloway was the top female finisher for ULM in the women's hammer throw, placing third with a toss of 153-2. She reached the distance on her third attempt of the afternoon and was one-inch shy of Gerianna Lyons (Northwestern State) for second.
 
ULM's Brice Chaney was among the top three finishers in the pole vault, clearing 14-1 1/4. Meanwhile in the men's shot put, teammates Kyle Weiss (54-0) and Micah Dye (53-1 1/2) emerged in third and fourth, respectively. Weiss also was responsible for a fourth-place performance in the discus throw with a mark of 150-9.
 
Three Warhawks, La'Porcha Griggs, Devyn Hosby and Paul produced fourth-place finishes on the afternoon. Griggs' came in the women's 100-meter dash, where she recorded a time of 12.20, while Hosby streaked down the 200-meter dash in 24.99. Paul, who had a third-place finish to her credit as well, wrapped up the women's 400-meter hurdles in a time of 1:05.07.
 
On the men's side, Andre Johnson and Austin Walker narrowly missed the podium in the 400-meter dash and high jump events, garnering fourth-place outings. Johnson crossed the line in 49.87 in the 400-meter dash, while Walker had a leap of 6-2 in the high jump.
 
Edith Jebet was the top women's finisher for the Warhawks in the 1500-meter run, crossing the tape in a time of 5:00.17. Her teammate Micaiah Dendy had a pair of fifth-place performances in the long jump (17-11) and triple jump (36-5).
 
ULM returns to action on Saturday, April 21 when the team heads to Baton Rouge to compete in the LSU Alumni Gold meet.
