Berry Captures Shreveport City Amateur Match Play Title

Men's Golf
SHREVEPORT, La. – ULM rising senior men's golfer Jeff Berry captured the first Shreveport City Amateur Match Play Championship of his career on the second playoff hole of the tournament on Sunday afternoon (June 17) at the Huntington Park Golf Course.

Berry, seeded No. 8 in the event, reached the title match after a win over fourth-seeded Jeremy Jeansonne in the semifinals. Meanwhile Brian Grubbs, the third overall seed at the event, set up the other half of the championship round with a victory over No. 7 Travis Wilmore.

The tightly contested championship round between Berry and Grubbs resulted in a tie as they teed off at the 17th hole. A double bogey by Berry opened the door for a one-up advantage by Grubbs entering the final hole.

"I thought that I'd lost the tournament (entering the 18th hole of regulation)," Berry said. "We were tied and I missed a four-footer and I made double bogey, which was a huge mistake."

However, Berry sank a putt from 20 feet away, while Grubbs missed at half the distance, to force a playoff.

"I knew if I didn't make that putt, I had lost it," Berry said. "So, I backed off the putt once or twice and focused in that last time. I made it and he missed it. I hate it for him that he missed it, but under the circumstances, it gave me a chance.''

A pair of pars on the first hole kept the pair tied, but Berry capitalized on a par putt on the second playoff hole while an attempt by Grubbs fell short to give Berry the title.

Berry grabbed his first title of the event after finishing second in the stroke play tournament on three occasions. His best previous finish in the Match Play tournament was the semifinals.
